‘Genius Loci’-TTC Runnymede Station (Concept)

Our piece is called: or simply translated ’the spirit of the place’. We’ve create a piece that’s site specific and considers the particular character, community and history surrounding Runnymede Station (2017).
We’ve created a piece that feels alive! One that will change with every visit. Just as living things do, this piece transforms depending on the time, the month and the vantage point that it’s being seen from; changing the perception of the space and providing a unique experience to TTC users and the surrounding community. During the day, as light moves along the spaces, these will be washed with colours, bringing the outdoors in and creating a sense of place. At night, the piece will be perceived from the exterior as the station glows from within.

To achieve this, we’ve created a continuous translucent coloured glass sculptural piece; a ‘ribbon of time’ that outlines the station’s main entrances and takes advantage of their east-west orientation.
Each entrance has been assigned a unique colour palette. Runnymede Road with the colours of Spring and Summer and Kennedy Avenue with the colours of Fall and Winter.
Each panel is composed of three layers:
Layer 1: the city as a collage of times and events;
Layer2: the local landmarks;
Layer 3: a horizontal strip representing the passing of time.
Together, the three layers come together and bring specificity to the site as they connect with the community’s past, present and future through a ribbon of light and colour that captures ‘the spirit of the place’.
